Simon's Activity
We’ve heard a lot through the discussions here and elsewhere about all the different ideas for getting young people to take action in their communities and change things for the better. No-one says it’s a bad idea. There are many proposals from all sorts of bodies for how it could and should be done and no doubt there will be many more. But ….. only 40% currently do it on a regular basis. If you... Read more

I was just sat here thinking and I was thinking if people think the same way at me, what I want to know is if young people are under represented in the UK I don't just want to a yes or no answer, I want the reason for your answer, and what can we do to make this change

almost 2 years agoI wouldn't say I am under represented in my constituency of Crawley because I'm currently doing work experince for my MP and I'm realising that he really does try to help constituents. But on bigger issues I would say that it feels like we are under represented but because people dont have a realistic idea as to how much time and effort they would need to put into the political system to get something... over 2 years agoThanks for your video Elliott- There's a lot of discussion at the moment about how to engage young people in politics, you mentioned lowering the voting age to engage young people and let them have their say...what do people think? Should you be able to vote at 16 if you can get married, pay taxes or join the army at the same age?

over 2 years agoI think someone needs to pick a lane with 16 and 17 year olds. Are they adults or not? At the moment it seems at best inconsistent - how can you not let people vote if you're taking tax off them and letting them join the army? Doesn't seem very democratic to me...

about 2 years agoJust picking up the dig about the media and the actions of politicians; I want politicians to admit the bad points about their proposals as well as the good, and to not have half of their energy devoted on public image. For example the policy the coalition government recently scrapped concerning the privatisation of forests; turns out that many of our forests are already privatised and an inderpendent... Read more
I have noticed as rise in prejudice against chavs and also against so called Toff's and posh people.
The Oxford dictionary defines Chav as a young lower-class person typified by brash and loutish behaviour and the wearing of (real or imitation) designer clothes.
What really worries me about this issue is that our public figures are also engaging in this attitude and prejudice which means that everyone... Read more

almost 2 years agoI can understand where your coming from even though I don't agree with it but I don't understand the conclusion you came to "so much to equal opportunities and access for all!". How do you feel that this point is justified with your evidence?

almost 2 years agowell I am basically saying with this prejudice going on it makes a mockery of equal opportunities and access for all as people will be put off applying to do this because of how they perceived and treated by others.

almost 2 years ago"Chav" isn't always used to define a class of people, the people that tend to be called chavvy are people who choose to dress and act the way they do. Out of experience, I know that chavs can be higher class people who simply choose to act as they do. The way they act and choose to disrespect others is why they get a bad name. It's easy for them to change.

Loads of films concentrate on a character rising from the slums or such as, but you never see the character as being a community... do you think this is an issue, could it be even promoting a greed?

Honestly I think you need more media coverage on the experince of volenteer work. I found that I enjoyed the work I have done in the past but I was aprehensive before hand as to how fun it would really be.

Not wanting to do it alone but struggling to get friends on board is a big issue for young people. Its most certainly an issue for me. No- one wants to turn up alone and spend the day doing good work in isolation. So creating an environment where people can get to know eachother, introductions and team building is important. Also time- we might be 'youth' but many of us work so we'd be giving up... Read more

I think a lot of it is that community groups aren't always that good at publicising their volunteering oppurtunities to student unions etc, and don't think of students as a good and easy pool of helpers. Also, until the recent changes, the disclosure system was a complete nightmare for anyone moving flats etc on a yearly basis - though hopefully this particular barrier will no longer be an issue.
