Controversial debates surround the sentencing of a protestor who threw a fire extinguisher from the 7th floor of the Millbank Tower during the tuition fee protests. Police said his actions 'could have resulted in catastrophic injury' but luckily no one was injured during the incident on November 11th 2010.
Edward Woollard, 18, was sentenced to two years and eight months after admitting at an earlier... Read more

over 2 years agoThis is a really interesting discussion and obviously people have quite different views on the subject... Do you think his actions have undermined the protestors that wanted to make a real point about the rise in fees?
-
Morgan Tunney
over 2 years agoI think that the majority have gone about it the wrong way. An aggressive protest with violence and abusive chanting is not going to get you anywhere.

about 2 years agoThe sentence is too harsh. But I agree with the verdict that he could have indeed killed someone with his actions.
I am lucky enough to be studying a course which has no tuition fees and has a bursary connected to it. Even with these advantages, I am finding university life a real struggle and am going to need to find some form of job in order to pay the rent - how do normal students cope?!

over 2 years agoYour one of the lucky ones, with no tuition fees! Imagine those that are affected by the rise in fees, i back the student protests in london

about 2 years agoI'm also lucky not to pay any fees but i'm struggling too to keep a balance of work and uni in check. I feel so bad for all those down in England who have a rise in tuition fees to pay and hope that it can be reversed and that free tuition fees for all with be in place one day soon!!
50p for a journey? 65p for a journey?..... £3.50 per day.... £4.20 every day if you do not have a student card?!
How much does it cost near you and do you think that should be some kind of financial assistance to get to school / college / apprenticeships / etc.?

over 2 years agoThey need to make train travel cheaper. It costs less to fly to Edinburgh than to take the train. They need to incentivise greener travel. Their needs to be an economic argument rather than just environmental in my view..
The government are very quick to raise the fees of education and take away the EMA, but for some reason they think that young children in low-income households need internet access to do work. I fully believe that everyone should have access to the web but we already have this in our schools and libraries so why do we need to spend £300 Million pounds on providing them with computers, laptops and... over 2 years agoOMG that's amazing. Free wifi from lamposts?? Awesome. I think it's awful that some people can't access the internet - you get excluded from all sorts of informaion and services if you can't get online. With libraries closing, the division will get even worse.
I like projects like this, where they train young people in how to recycle computers for charities and people in need, and they end up getting... Read more

over 2 years agoI am with Ste on this one. The internet is a wonderful resource but there are "better" things that the money could be spent on.

over 2 years agoBut I suppose every policy or investment has an opportunity cost, for example the married couple tax break of about £3 a week will cost £550mn (equal to EMA budget), which could be spent on say, volunteering or the NHS. I do think connecting people to the internet, who otherwise would struggle to, is rather important for many reasons.
On Saturday, I attended the ChooseYouth rally in Solihull; this event was brought together because Youth Services seem to have been seen as an easy target reducing public spending and thus the majority of them are being culled.
Near the beginning of the rally, there was a wonderful figure given, the £6billion (£6,000,000,000) that are by being given in banker bonuses could keep youth services going... Read more

over 2 years agoHey Morgan, thanks for letting us know how the rally went, I think the young lady you are talking about is in this video... http://goo.gl/D6a7r
Also one of the websites members Sabian is meeting with Children & Families minister Tim Loughton to develop a new youth policy. He wants to hear from young people about the most effective ways of including young people in the decision-making process... Read more

I agree with Henry - and what Hannah said too - being a Campaign Manager is definitely the best title
