"I was very pleased to read Mr Miliband’s interview in The Times today, and his observation that the recent budget cuts are crippling the future of Britain’s youth. The government, consisting of middle-aged rich white men, has completely under-represented the entire youth population of Britain. The more I look at their policies, I struggle to see who they represent, besides themselves. Mervyn King, yet another rich white man, said that monetary policy can not be moulded around what the British citizens would like to happen, and that we will need to face hardships to heal Britain’s economy. It is frustratingly insufferable for a man with a £5.4 million pension to talk of financial hardship.

I am not some disgruntled parent, or casual observer of current events, but a 23-year-old girl who has felt the wrath of the budget cuts at every turn. I am not alone. Allow me to outline the problem facing every single young person in Britain who does not have the income that the men who are running this country are lucky to have. A young girl wants to go to college, but cannot afford to travel there after the EMAs were scrapped. Somehow, she manages the cost and achieves excellent A-Levels. However, she now faces the £9,000 university fees, and is denied what little grant money is out there. She has no choice but to end her education, and attempt to find a job. However, with redundancies and mass closures going on across Britain, she finds herself entering a shrinking job market, and with no degree, she loses out. Eager to keep herself busy, she volunteers at a community radio station, KIC FM in Wolverhampton, to enhance her social circle, learn useful media skills and to have a reason to wake up in the morning. She then hears the news that when March comes, funding will be axed to KIC FM and several other community projects, leaving her again at a loss with what to do in her life. She comes home and reads in the paper that bankers will still be getting healthy bonuses, as she weeps to the loss of her own future. All this has suddenly become too much to handle, so she visits her GP and is diagnosed with mild depression. She visits an NHS councillor, and finds hope again. In March, the axe will again fall and the psychosocial unit her councillor works for will be shut down, leaving her no time to rebuild her mental strength.

What is she to do now?

The coalition government have taken away our education, our careers, our prospects, our mental well-being, and worst of all, our hope for the future. KIC FM (Kids In Communication) faces closure. The Kids will no longer be In Communication. The Coalition government has officially silenced us.
