Lydia's Activity

I am a vegetarian. I have been since i was 8. I occasionally eat fish so that could make me a pescetarian. I have notices how people have a real issue with me being vegetarian.

They think it's okay to make snidy comments at my decision to simply not eat meat. They wouldn't do that to a Hindu or Buddhist who didn't eat meat, so why should i be any different?

I don't preach to people, or try to... Read more

I agree, but whenever i do tell people why it seems to offend them. Therefore when someone asks, i tend to just mumble that i 'don't like meat' to save confrontation. However in reality, i don't agree with killing animals but if you say this to someone they get all defensive and seem to think i am having a go at them! Thanks for your comment!

I guess the issue is when you explain that, you still have the tricky problem that you eat fish. I completely respect your choice in saying you do not wish to eat meat, however in eating fish your argument does come fatally flawed.

Also, I don't think alot of people ask to confront, I think it's more out of interest, and wanting to understand your choices.

I think with the fish thing you have a point, and i have significant;y cut down on my consumption. Also, i don't mind people having an interest at all! The questions are fine, it's the agressive nature of the questions i object to!

I don't understand what is the problem with people who eat fish and don't eat meat. I agree with you because I have a very close friend who unfortunately has the exact same issue. Although she eats fish she doesn't eat meat. It's her personal choice and people don't accept it because "fishes are cute animals too". Well some people have health issues that cannot eat meat. Others is simply a matter... Read more

I think fake vegetarians are part of the reason veggies get mocked (which is usually light-hearted mocking). You're a pescatarian, not a vegetarian, be proud! My friend loves telling people she's a pesky pescatarian.

I get really concerned to know that we are breeding a generation of young people who are so used to 'watching' and not 'reading'. The Tv set Pc/laptops, computer games, cinema is already the average young person's life routine. So many young people I come across are ignorant of what goes on in the news, harldy read newspapers/magazines and are never really into reading books that will expand their... Read more

I completely agree, so many people at my school would never choose to read simply for the sake of reading and a lot of them probably couldn't tell you who England's prime minister is. Another issue with the lack of reading is that it's effecting teenagers' basic communication skills, something that really needs to be sorted out.

I think that many people don't read as much as they perhaps should do, well not 'proper' books anyway. But some people would argue that despite maybe never actually picking up a book to read they are still able to develop their knowlege of the world through the use of social networking delevering them news as it happens, or the use of such things as Online Newspapers/Magazines or Kindles which enable... Read more

Hello Everyone,

I help out at youth clubs and and vollunteer with the NVYA. There is one issue that I still see happening in day to day life and thats BULLYING! I don't feel that there is enough support in place for victims who are bullied. I think there is more that can be done - I would like to set up a campaign to beat bullying once and for all. It took me a while to decide on a name for this... Read more

...to clarify my point..the notion of 'stamping it out' sounds as though it falls in-line with previously used disciplinary measures. As an alternative I recommend taking a look at Community Model in Corrections: http://www.youtube.com/user/CommunityModel
Or watch season four of The Wire. They introduce a learning and development scheme for school bullies, or lets say, kids capable of murder. Yes... Read more

i dont think u can beat bullying but there are ways of helping i have been a victim of bullying for many reasons and it has had a great effect on my confidence and self esteem my mum has always told me people bully because they feel insicure about themselves but in my eyes this makes no sense because i have been bullied i am insicure but i dont go out and bully.

As well as helping victims, bullies should be helped to see why what they do is wrong and try to help with the underlying causes. A lot of schools teach that bullying is wrong but when bullying happens they don't try to find out why it happened. Bullies do tend to feel insecure and need to feel in charge, so maybe helping with self-esteem for both bullies and victims?

Because it gives our civilization some kind of order. I'm not saying that it couldn't be distributed more fairly because it definitely could, but it gives people who do jobs that don't have a physical reward in themselves (such as a doctor) pay for their work. There, you have a reply :)

Do 16 year olds have the right to vote?

Should you be able to vote at 16 if you can get married, pay taxes or join the army at the same age? Are politicians losing future voters and encouraging apathy by not giving 16 & 17 year olds a vote?

Poll question
The voting age should be lowered to 16.

One the one hand, a lot of 16 year olds are complete muppets, but then a lot of over 18 year olds are complete muppets too, and they can vote, so I kind of think why not?

If 16 year olds are deemed by society to be responsible enough to work full time, live on their own, get married, etc, then putting a cross next to a name on a bit of paper shouldn't be too chalenging.

I don't think a lot of 16year-olds would vote even if they had the chance to. By the time people reach 18 they've completed their education and normally have more knowledge and understand the responsibility better.

Prejudice against homosexuals. More should be done to teach people that it's not a choice and not all homosexuals are freaks. Especially in high schools where a lot of people have self-esteem issues anyway.

I have noticed as rise in prejudice against chavs and also against so called Toff's and posh people.
The Oxford dictionary defines Chav as a young lower-class person typified by brash and loutish behaviour and the wearing of (real or imitation) designer clothes.

What really worries me about this issue is that our public figures are also engaging in this attitude and prejudice which means that everyone... Read more

I can understand where your coming from even though I don't agree with it but I don't understand the conclusion you came to "so much to equal opportunities and access for all!". How do you feel that this point is justified with your evidence?

well I am basically saying with this prejudice going on it makes a mockery of equal opportunities and access for all as people will be put off applying to do this because of how they perceived and treated by others.

"Chav" isn't always used to define a class of people, the people that tend to be called chavvy are people who choose to dress and act the way they do. Out of experience, I know that chavs can be higher class people who simply choose to act as they do. The way they act and choose to disrespect others is why they get a bad name. It's easy for them to change.
