Hi All
Hope you're all well.
Been a while since I posted.
Just wanted to let you all know we're still fighting hard for young people. We've been speaking to the local council, our MPs and have even manage to speak to Nick Hurd under our local MPs behalf. We're moving forward in every way possible.
We are in a very strong position at the moment. As you're well aware, the riots saw young... Read more

keep up the good work of giving the government and other decision makers a balanced view of young people with in the UK!
What’s the connection between the Big Society and the government’s vision for higher education, school leavers and graduate skills? The answer is a “green gap year” for students.
Imagine the energy of teenage volunteers able to complete community service, help with projects to address climate change and contribute towards sustainability. This could be delivered through a voluntary period of National... Read more

Just 3 questions; how is it funded? how are you going to market it so as many young people can think about applying for it? is there going to be some funds for young people who need extra support so they can take part?
James Derounian
Hi Myriam,
It's in its early days.....but I would hope that it could be marketed widely e.g. through schools & existing orgs like Community Service Volunteers; funding - possibly Government, chartities or businesses....or a mix!
I'll think on the extra support! It's a work in progress.
James
Being inspired by Onyere's blog I decided to write my own about the 21st Century Activist event organised by the Big Society's Big Mouth and the Parliamentary Outreach on the 23rd May.
So, it was a really early start for me that morning, having to wake up at around 4.30am (although I must admit I snoozed my alarm at least 3 times and got up at 5.00) to catch a train at 6.30am from Newcastle to... Read more

My project is to becoming the ARK Angel, (Acts of Random Kindness), for your community, and go around your town commiting simple, happy acts, from giving up your seat on the bus to leaving 20p's in phonebooths, to quote the ad, every little helps, and it can really brighten a person's day.

@Joe, I think you largely misunderstand the banking system. Banks don't just key in an increase to their own bank account. They just lend out more money than they have creating more money upon repayment of the debt.
You may think this is wrong, but it is vital for a strong growing economy and without it banks would just be safes. Places to store your money. There would be no loans. The only people... Read more

Haha, good idea! I'm sure he'd be able to survive with small donations from his poor friends, bankers. He encourages volunteering, so he might as well set the example!

If Cameron really cares about the big society and volunteering he should be there now setting an example but his not.
If I worked as his PA that would be the first thing I make him do.
Last week Rory Stewart, Member of Parliament for Penrith and The Border was quoted on the Conservative Home blog as saying,
“The big society is not a replacement for everything; it is not a silver bullet or a panacea… we need a state where there are issues of expertise. For example, brain surgery is best left to the state, not a community.”
I’ll wait for everyone to take a deep sigh of relief... Read more

I think it just means that the crazy local busybody types get to take over.
From slactivists to anarchists there’s a lot of opinions out there about how young people engage (or not) with politics and social change. But we want facts not opinions . We’re doing some research into attitudes towards social change, and what exactly 21st century activism looks like. In all its shapes and sizes. We can’t do this without you.
If you could spare us 15 minutes between... Read more

Building the Big Society
Community based projects and local social enterprises have been run for many years. However, a malaise in local activism and increasing centralisation under the previous Government has led to the development of the Big Society approach. This has the potential to improve local services and take citizen power to the next level.
Much has been said over the last 18 months... Read more

I volunteer in one of the areas where Big Society could actually work very well - gardening. It's not a task that people would worry about being carried out by volunteers, unlike roles related to things like health and education. It's also task that people actually enjoy doing, so would be willing to do for free. And an army of Big Society volunteers working in our parks, community gardens and... Read more

The Big Society in (in)action
You can't encourage volunteering by cutting the professionals who the volunteers depend on.
Never let it be said that at the new economics foundation we don’t practice what we preach. For few months, nef staff have been volunteering with disabled children’s riding lessons at Vauxhall City Farm. Researchers more used to writing papers on social capital, well-being... Read more

In theory as well as practice is the belief of a Big Society helpful, or not, to young people?
Is the NCS likely to be effective?
Are young people being labelled?
Are young people more likely to participate or rebel?
Is the NCS likely to prove attractive, if so to who and why?
How much ownership do young people have?
Is young people’s ‘deviant’ or criminal behaviour likely to be reduced... Read more
