Do 16 year olds have the right to vote?

Should you be able to vote at 16 if you can get married, pay taxes or join the army at the same age? Are politicians losing future voters and encouraging apathy by not giving 16 & 17 year olds a vote?

Poll question
The voting age should be lowered to 16.

I saw someone put on Facebook that "you can have sex with an MP two years before you can even vote for him/her". Where's the sense in that?

One the one hand, a lot of 16 year olds are complete muppets, but then a lot of over 18 year olds are complete muppets too, and they can vote, so I kind of think why not?

If 16 year olds are deemed by society to be responsible enough to work full time, live on their own, get married, etc, then putting a cross next to a name on a bit of paper shouldn't be too chalenging.

Have you seen that Bremen in Germany is allowing 16 year olds to vote in a state election for the first time?

I don't think a lot of 16year-olds would vote even if they had the chance to. By the time people reach 18 they've completed their education and normally have more knowledge and understand the responsibility better.

If people could vote for elections and referendums online, would more people take part?

I'd like to be able to vote online, although it would have to be a secure enough method for it to be used. But then, postal votes aren't very secure.

I'm not sure it would make a particularly big difference. Many people aren't actually registered to vote, so they'd still have to do that. and they'd have to register to have an email vote too. Also, it's often people from deprived communities... Read more

I think it would get more people to vote but how would it be safe. You could have hackers hack into it, look at sony at the moment, yes only a games console but something like that could happen to online voting very easy.

i totally didn't think about that Natalie. As I really don't care about politics (it's not that I just don't care, it's that I don't want to - it's all egos and hot air and until the whole country is represented fairly.. anyway.. that's another thread!) I was all 'yeah, go on then, online voting, winning' but the hacking thing is a dark idea... really dark..

They could also you would have to put in a lot of private details about you. for example NI number etc to prove its you. All you need is one person to hack into it and they would have alll your details they could use to pretend they are you.

The Electoral Commission's research indicates 56% of young people eligible to vote are not registered to do so.

With two days left to register to vote on the upcoming referendum, we want to know: Do you vote?

Please let us know any other thoughts you have on voting in the comments box below!

My polling station is at our local pub so it's a nice excuse to head down with a bunch of neighbours and bond over a little community spirit! Wouldn't say that voting particularly whet any of our whistles though....

I have voted since I was 18, but for no reason really; I don't believe it will make any difference, or that I'll be letting anyone down if I don't, and I don't think I've ever thought any of the candidates would be any good. The AV referendum might be more interesting.

I truly believe that even though I vote, politicians are not interesting in representing either me or the majority of young voters. I hope that AV will give as an opportunity to be listened to.

It's all realtive though; that was for a small charity and it was not a stressful experience at all (so I could work in the evenings to support myself during it) but I guess if big corporates/banks are expecting interns to deliver and have lots of responsibility then a little more than straightforward expenses would probably be welcome in those cases.

I have two students, both work for me in my business as part of their degree, they come to work with me, I teach them how to do the work, give them the skills, and they help out. I don't pay them, theyre being paid in the experience of learning new skills! I was told by the uni's not to pay them, because theyre only doing it to gain experience, theyre not qualified, and If im going to pay someone... Read more

Big society means big problems ahead of us. big picture is being blurred, no one knows what it means, some feels its a disaster in every aspects and some feels it is an opportunity go back to basis. I say we are, where we are and we need to make it better. Basit Shah

Hi Michael, some very interesting points. What do others think about AV? Do we know enough to make a decision in the referendum? Will people get involved and turn out to vote?

I'm really hoping that SOMEONE explains it... even if it's just 'the Tory's HATE it'. Because then I know how I'll vote :)

Plus, my polling station is in our lovely local. So it's a nice excuse for a half a guiness with the neighbours!
