A huge thanks to Rui, Megan, Holly, David, Hafsha and Lian for their stunning entries to the Kings Speech competition.
In true X Factor style we have now counted and verified all the votes cast in the competition (this included allowing up to two votes per household and then removing any further duplicate IP addresses).
Drum roll please....we are delighted to announce that the overall winner... Read more

almost 2 years agoI think it is interesting to consider a world where everyone has enough money? Would we all spend spend on ourselves or would we be more generous?
Would we forget about other limits, for example even if money isn't a problem, we still have a finite amount of land to grow food on, a finite earth for people to live on and to throw rubbish on and our health is also limited, we can't control it. If... Read more
v knows that full-time volunteering can provide a great way for young people to gain the skills and practical work experience needed to gain employment. However, at the moment, if an unemployed young person wants to undertake a full-time volunteering programme, they have to come off Job Seekers Allowance, which causes major hassle for them, and impacts on other benefits they receive too (e.g. housing... almost 2 years agoyes they should so that they can gain skills in order to move forward, making it easier to get jobs.

almost 2 years agoYep, going for yes on this one. The volunteering bit could make sure that skills and work ethics don't rust while looking for jobs. Although, I'm wondering if the times would impact the ability to search for a job.
I mean, if I person has to work/volunteer 9-5 then the'll probably be tired by the end to look for a job.

almost 2 years agoThe thing is the goverment want to force people on JSA to do certain jobs e.g. pick up litter etc, (what people pay there taxes for) and if they refuse they stop there JSA. Which i do think is a cover for cuts.
I think people should Vol if they want to and not be forced into it, and it should not affect there JSA. As long as that person is still looking for a job then it should be ok.

almost 2 years agoNo, it all sounds like a good idea to start with, but volunteering in the private sector to gain experience simply replaces the paid worker with a free worker. For example, my friend is on Job seekers allowance, he wanted to get a job in a pub/restauraunt, but the employers wanted him to have more experience, so he asked if he could volunteer for free, but he couldnt because he would lose his JSA... I've noticed that a lot of discussions on here are negative-focussed: what's wrong with the government, the Big Society agenda, etc.
How about a more positive thread?
If the government has got it all wrong and doesn't understand young people, then what volunteering have you done recently? What's important in your community? Do you work in an area, or study something you really love? What are your... Read more

What is the difference between Volunteering and being an Intern?
They both currently don't get paid?
But is there a difference in beliefs and attitudes between the interns and volunteers?

Would Britain be better if everyone worked only 21 hours a week?
People would be happier because they'd have better lives outside of work and more time to spend with their families. There'd be more jobs to go around, and time to volunteer.
Interesting stuff based on a report from the New Economics Foundation - is getting everyone to work less the answer to ironing out inequalities? Would you... Read more

about 2 years agono my partner works 25 hours on minimum wage and that is not enough to pay bills, do shopping ect. so 21 hours would be alot less! maybe if young people were paid equally to the rest of society then it could be possible! i'd like to see the govenment work their hours on £5 an hour! see how long they last!!

about 2 years agothis would be a terrible idea, as nobody would have any money, it would be great for people working in offices, being paid by somebody in higher authority, but what about the farmer? if he worked 21 hours a week the crops would not grow. at all, and if 20 more people were working on the farm to fill up the hours, think of the fuel needed to transport them, the insurance and the training needed... either way, it looks hideous

Hey Rukayya good to have you on the site. I don't know - I reckon they look better than a coal power station? Or even a nuclear power station?
Rukayya Ismail
meh, valid point
great alternative too, cant argue with that
VHenry Mackintosh
i reckon we need to cut down on our consumption though - we can't cover the entire planet in solar panels...
Rukayya Ismail
Perhaps we can! 3700km above the earth surface- a cover of solar panels! Brilliant, it'll have full access to direct sunlight =lots of energy, although sunlight will be blocked out- we could always have a fake sun AND it'll provide a sheet of protection from alien invasions! ... *-* I'm going back to bed
